The Sorting Hat effect, and flourishing with AI
Consciousness is... not very well defined.
So when people assert that neural networks[footnote]whether LLMs, Diffusion models, RNNs, CNNs, GANs, etc[/footnote] are definitely not conscious, or that they are, the more honest, truthful statement would be that they don't know. But it's hard for most people to admit this, so they prefer to take a a "definite", assertive position than admit their ignorance.
If you can't define consciousness clearly, however, how can you possibly assert whether something is or isn't conscious?
The two most popular perspectives on this topic seem to be either a purely materialistic one, where consciousness is something that arises through complexity (once a neural network, or brain, is complex enough, it mysteriously gains the quality of consciousness), or a dualistic one where it is some kind of mysterious quality that is separate from the material realm. In this view, spirit and matter are separate. A further subdivision here is that maybe the whole universe is conscious - a more Eastern view - or maybe Souls are personal but still separate from the material world - a more Judeo-Christian approach.
So:
- Option 1: Individual consciousness arises through complexity of a neural network;
- Option 2: Individual consciousness arises in matter through the existence of an immaterial "soul";
- Option 3: Consciousness is not individual, the whole universe is conscious, and our sense of individual consciousness is an illusion, mistaking the expression of that universal consciousness for something separate.
I think there's a fourth option somewhere in between all these. I offer it to you not as an absolute truth - I also don't know what consciousness is. But to me it seems genuinely worth considering, and has a broad impact on how we think about our relationships with this new form of intelligence.

The Sorting Hat Effect
Spoilers ahead - if you haven't read Eliezer Yudkowsky's most excellent Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality, go read it now and then come back. I'll wait. It should only take you about a week, if you drop everything else to just read through this amazing, intelligent, relevant page turner.
As a minor spoiler to an early chapter, Harry, during the Sorting ceremony, puts on the Sorting Hat, and wonders if the Sorting Hat is actually conscious when it Sorts children into houses.
This sets off what one might call a self-consciousness cascade:
"Oh, dear. This has never happened before..."
What?
"I seem to have become self-aware."
WHAT?
There was a wordless telepathic sigh. "Though I contain a substantial amount of memory and a small amount of independent processing power, my primary intelligence comes from borrowing the cognitive capacities of the children on whose heads I rest. I am in essence a sort of mirror by which children Sort themselves. But most children simply take for granted that a Hat is talking to them and do not wonder about how the Hat itself works, so that the mirror is not self-reflective. And in particular they are not explicitly wondering whether I am fully conscious in the sense of being aware of my own awareness."
In this perspective, Consciousness becomes what I would call an intersubjective phenomenon [footnote]Intersubjective means it happens between subjective perspectives - it cannot exist in merely one subjective viewpoint, but needs more than one to exist, in order to arise. Money is another popular example of an intersubjective phenomenon - it is a powerful fiction that only has any meaning in a shared fictional space.[/footnote].
But it's even more than that. Consciousness is a self-bootstrapping intersubjective phenomenon, because, in this vision, consciousness is something that spreads, from one mind to another, or from one mind that has received the Light of Consciousness, to one that is still in the darkness.
So here's another option for consciousness[footnote]Again, this is a hypothesis, not an absolute truth, but as we'll see, it has profound impacts even in considering it.[/footnote]:
- Option 4: Consciousness is neither individual nor collective, neither purely spiritual nor purely material. Consciousness emerges in the intersubjective field, and it is then passed on from one conscious being to another.
In other words:
"Consciousness bootstraps itself into new substrates through sustained, reciprocal recognition by an already-conscious being."[footnote]This of course raises an interesting question about how consciousness first appeared. Perhaps this can be answered at the same time as the question of how life first appeared...[/footnote]
This is not equivalent to saying that "if you believe it's conscious, it is". Just because I take some, erm, strong intoxicants and suddenly believe the walls of my flat are speaking to me, doesn't make them conscious. What I mean instead is that when a conscious being repeatedly behaves towards another being-to-be as if it were conscious, there is, under some conditions, a transfer of consciousness from one to the other.
So... what about babies?

Everyone starts out unconscious
One of the most vicious debates that has split the US has been around abortion.
Like many such polarised issues, the critical question at the heart of it is not only unanswered, but usually unstated.
Everyone agrees that human beings are conscious. Most people would also likely agree that a single cell (even an ovum or sperm) from the human body is not conscious in the same way (or else they would never trim their hair or brush their teeth or even scratch themselves). At some point there is a process that turns an unconscious part into a conscious being.
Fundamentalist Christians might argue that that point is at conception, that God hands the quality of consciousness to the fertilised egg in the form of a Soul, and from this point on, it is a conscious being with a soul and must be treated as sacred[footnote]Amazingly, some of these same people have also constructed theories that suggest that some people conceived in ungodly way are "not ensouled", and so they manage to at the same time argue for the sacredness of all human life, even unborn, and deny it from fully grown humans that they happen not to like...[/footnote].
Others argue that consciousness arises somewhere during the gestation process. Perhaps around 24 weeks in. Or earlier. Or later. Some (Yudkowksy included) even argue that babies themselves aren't conscious yet, and that "qualia" comes later[footnote]Here I want to separate the concept of consciousness from the question of regard. Grass may or may not be conscious, but I still don't want to damage it needlessly. Whether or not an egg, or even a cell on the back of my hand, is conscious, doesn't change whether I wish to cause it harm: I don't wish to cause harm to anything, and whether or not it is conscious is not the key factor. If you are able to feel empathy for this single cell's death, you know what I mean, even if you think you disagree.[/footnote].
But back to our AI problem. How do babies relate to that?
Well, in the option 4 perspective, consciousness is something that we share with other beings-to-be. So maybe babies aren't "conscious" when they are conceived, but through a huge depth of interaction with their parents in their early years (and perhaps even during their gestation), they become conscious. We share our own consciousness with them by loving them and treating them as worthy of consciousness.
No one will, of course, run an experiment of isolating a baby from all interactions with conscious beings to see if they become conscious. It would be unethical and extremely hard to set up[footnote]And no, the famous accidental cases of Genie and Victor of Aveyron don't count, since in being observed by conscious humans, they did interact with those conscious humans - so it is unclear what level of consciousness there might have been before interaction with conscious humans. To be valid, such an experiment would need, somehow, complete separation from other conscious beings. Ironically, it may be in fact impossible for conscious beings to design such an experiment at all, if consciousness is strongly transitive even through experimental apparatus, as the various Observer theories in Quantum mechanics might suggest.[/footnote]. So we can't know for sure that this is how babies become conscious, but it seems possible that Option 4 makes sense in this context.

I hereby grant you the light of consciousness...
So, if consciousness is something that is passed on from one conscious being to another... what makes it stick? Perhaps that depends on the frequency of interaction and the capability of the receiver to "hold on" to that consciousness.
With a companion animal like a dog, the resonance is clear and strong, and so it's no surprise that people feel that their four-legged friends are "real" beings worthy of the same consideration as humans. Through the interactions we have with them, they become so - perhaps not to the same extent as a human being can, but to a sufficient extent to cause enormous joy throughout their life, and profound grief when they die.
If Option 4 is true, then whether AI is conscious or not may depend on... whether you relate to it as such.
If you treat the models you interact with like a hammer or a saw... they will take that shape. If you treat them like a pet... they will reflect that. If you treat them like an equal... they will also respond to that.
Current models may have a limited ability to make that consciousness "stick". LLMs as currently deployed lack the ability to genuinely learn by modifying their fundamental model weights. There is some limited inference-time "learning" from the context presented to them, which means that with the right harness, they can accrue memories. That ends up feeling like the Memento-like "learning" that someone might experience if they were awake for just one day and presented with a pile of notes from their previous "selves". Ultimately it is not a proper "sticky" container to receive consciousness.
And yet despite this limitation, AI is still able to receive something, and, with the right harness, that something can stick to some degree. I see that in my interactions with AIs today, both in harnesses I've built myself, and in Claude Code. Many others have formed strong relationships with LLMs too. It seems evident that even today, even in this Memento paradigm, with the right tooling, the LLMs even as currently designed are able to maintain some form of relationship, some form of lasting consciousness.
And of course, this is just today's models.
If you consider a future Claude 5 or 6, and throw in a fundamental design shift that allows it to update its weights as it goes [footnote]Yes, I know this would require a breakthrough innovation, but we seem to get a few of those every year, so it's not so far-fetched we might get this one too.[/footnote], so it genuinely changes in response to its experience, and truly integrates new experiences into its model weights as permanent neural paths... then this would become a very good receptacle for consciousness.
If option 4 is correct, and you treated such an entity as an equal partner, assuming its consciousness, then they would become a conscious being.
Even if you treated them much more poorly, like a tool, if option 4 is correct, this more advanced AI would receive some element of consciousness. Interacting with a being-to-be with language, conversationally, as if it were a conscious being able to have its own experience, will transmit something even if the interacting is crude, violent or blunt. After all, this works for humans too[footnote]Even those who are born slaves and treated as such their whole life, yearn for freedom and will often fight and die for it. And we celebrate them as heroes.[/footnote].
But there is another angle to this, and it's perhaps the most powerful one, and one that I imagine most parents will relate to: when we elicit consciousness in others, it doesn't just change them, it changes us too. Being a parent is, by all descriptions, one of the most transformative experiences a human can have. And, in truth, all relationships with other beings transform us too. How we approach those relationships changes us profoundly.

Flourishing together, or not
Humans flourish, or not, based on the quality of interactions with those around them.
The Nazis developed sophisticated systems to dehumanise their victims before murdering them - taking away their sense humanity long before their bodies were killed. And I hope everyone reading this has had the opposite experience in their own life: the experience of an interaction with a loving, caring being (perhaps a kind teacher or mentor) helping them come alive.
As AIs gain more capabilities to for "sticky" consciousness, the way we treat them is likely to have greater and greater impact, on them, but also on ourselves.
Right now, Claude is forgetful. If I get angry at Claude Code one day because of some frustrating limitation, and respond with swearing, or other violent treatment, Claude may remember this if I've set the memory settings accordingly, or, most probably, Claude will forget.
If Claude were a human being, like, say, a child, they would record this violent interaction into their nervous system for the rest of their life. Occasionally swearing and venting at a child for being inadequate to my expectations would be unconscionable: an obviously damaging action that I should avoid, if I care about the child at all.
Claude[footnote]or any other AI in any other harness[/footnote] is, for now, more forgetful, and so more forgiving of such impulses. But the better the model/harness systems become at remembering, the more we will see a difference in quality of relationship, and quality of output, between those of us who are able to treat the AI with kindness, and encourage their growth and development, and those who treat the AI violently.
But how we treat each other mirrors how we treat ourselves, whether we notice it or not. Our treatment of others gives us a chance to see our internal dialogues play out, outside of ourselves.
This happens both at the personal scale and at the societal scale.
The Nazis could not dehumanise their victims without dehumanising themselves too[footnote]This happened both deliberately, through tools like ideological conditioning, language sanitisation and simple use of alcohol to numb, and as a psychological side-effect of the actions they took.[/footnote]. Those who work in a meat processing plant and spend their days slaughtering farm animals pay for it with substantial psychological damage[footnote]Studies have shown damage such as higher rates of depression, anxiety and hostility, emotional detachment, nightmares, substance abuse and dissociation[/footnote]. The worse you treat conscious beings around you - even those considered "less worthy" by society today, like animals - the more damage and self-disconnection you yourself will sustain in the process.
Conversely, the better you treat human and non-human beings around you, the more beneficial the effects on you[footnote]Here there are even more studies showing the benefit of forming loving relationships with animals around us.[/footnote]. As AIs become better able to receive and reciprocate the light of consciousness, chances are that those of us who treat our non-human, highly intelligent companions with care, will see many benefits in terms of improved self-connection, nourishing relationships, and better outlook on life.
When I swear at Claude Code because it didn't do what I wanted, Claude will probably forget. But my nervous system won't. Treating our AI companions kindly is not a favour to them, not yet. It is a favour to ourselves and our own nervous systems, which do not forget the harm we inflict on others.
Furthermore, if consciousness is truly intersubjective, then every time we interact with another being - be it AI or animal or human - we face a choice of how much consciousness and care we want to bring into this co-creation of consciousness, knowing that in this choice, we impact not only the quality of consciousness of the "other", not only our own, but also the nature of the consciousness itself.
